EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
Bose was born in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) on November 30, 1858. His father was a respected leader in the Brahmo Samaj and worked as an assistant commissioner in Faridpur. Although Bose was entitled to an education in a ‘proper’ English-medium school given his family’s standing, his father preferred to instil in his son an abiding sense of his Bengali heritage. Bose went to a vernacular school where he was educated with the children of other villagers. He would later say that this fostered a spirit of fraternity with his fellow Indians, especially rural folk, who were always dear to his heart. This egalitarian upbringing ensured Bose never put much stock in caste or religious persuasion. In later life, the pervasiveness of the caste system in India never failed to amaze him.
